The Identity Crisis Inside Your AI Stack

Look, we've built some of the most sophisticated identity systems in the history of enterprise security. Zero Trust architecture. Conditional access policies. Privileged Identity Management. Hardware tokens. The whole stack. And then, right in the middle of it, we quietly deployed hundreds of AI agents that don't appear in any of it.

RSAC 2026 just spent three days saying this out loud. The consensus from the floor: AI agent identity is the number one unresolved security problem in the enterprise right now. Not AI-generated phishing. Not deepfake voice cloning. The basic question of who — or what — is acting inside your systems, and whether you can actually verify it.

The Issue: The problem isn't that AI agents are malicious. It's that they're invisible.

An AI agent that summarizes your legal contracts has read access to your legal vault. An agent that manages executive calendars has visibility into board meeting schedules and sensitive email threads. An agent that monitors cloud spend has credentials to query billing APIs. Now ask yourself: are any of those agents registered in your identity management system? Do they show up in your access logs? Can you revoke their access in under five minutes if something goes wrong?

If your answer to any of those is "not sure" or "no," you're not alone. The data from RSAC is striking. Forty-three percent of organizations are using shared service accounts for AI agents, which means multiple agents operate under the same identity. Twelve percent of security teams don't even know how their deployed agents authenticate. And 81% agree that a successful prompt manipulation attack could expose credentials held by those agents.

This week's LangChain and LangGraph disclosures made the abstract concrete. Researchers identified three critical flaws in the two most popular AI agent development frameworks — tools that were downloaded a combined 75 million times last week alone. The vulnerabilities expose filesystem data, environment variables including API keys and database passwords, and the full conversation history of running agents. The attack path exists in part because agents are typically deployed with overly broad permissions. Nobody defined "least privilege" for a conversational AI system. They just gave it what it needed to work, and moved on.

The Opportunity: The security industry is moving fast, and RSAC showed what the solutions actually look like.

Accenture and Anthropic launched Cyber.AI this week, a joint platform designed to shift enterprise security operations from reactive manual response to continuous autonomous defense. It's targeting SOC automation and threat triage first, which are the areas where volume and speed have already overwhelmed human teams.

Ping Identity launched its Identity for AI platform specifically for registering, provisioning, and monitoring AI agents as verified non-human identities. Palo Alto Networks released Prisma AIRS 3.0, which secures the full agentic AI lifecycle and lets enterprises move from observation mode to safe autonomous execution. Astrix Security expanded its platform to cover every layer where AI agents operate in an enterprise.

The concept getting the most traction is "just-in-time governance" with every high-risk action an agent wants to take gets authorized in real time based on live context, not standing permissions. Think of it as a surgeon calling for verbal confirmation before an incision, except it's automated and takes milliseconds. IBM, Auth0, and Yubico announced a joint solution to implement exactly this for enterprise deployments.

Why It Matters: At the board level, this has two dimensions: liability and coverage.

If an AI agent your organization deployed accesses data it shouldn't, exfiltrates something sensitive, or takes an unauthorized action, then you own that. The SEC's cyber disclosure rules don't distinguish between a human attacker and a misbehaving AI agent. The board will ask what controls were in place.

And the insurance question is live. Underwriters are already updating their questionnaires to ask about AI agent deployments, access controls, and audit capability. The European Commission breach this week, where attackers stole hundreds of gigabytes from AWS cloud storage without triggering internal detection is exactly the kind of incident that makes carriers scrutinize AI-adjacent controls at renewal time.

The Playbook:

  1. Run the Agent Inventory Now: Pull every AI tool your teams are using with any automated or background capability. Document what systems each agent touches and cross-reference against your IAM policies. If an agent isn't registered in your identity management system, it has no audit trail — and no audit trail means no defensible position in an incident investigation.

  2. Patch LangChain and LangGraph This Week: If your development teams are using either framework, treat this as a critical patch cycle. Pin to the latest versions of langchain-core and langgraph. Audit any agents built on these frameworks for overly broad filesystem access or environment variable scope and those are the exact attack paths the disclosed vulnerabilities exploit.

  3. Brief Your Cyber Insurance Broker Before Renewal: Your risk profile changed materially the moment you deployed autonomous agents in production. Schedule a review specifically to discuss AI agent controls, referencing the emerging industry frameworks from IBM, Auth0, and Yubico as evidence of reasonable due diligence. This is a coverage material disclosure conversation, not a future problem.

📡 THREAT RADAR - Rapid intelligence on active threats

  • LangChain / LangGraph — Three Critical CVEs (March 2026):
    Risk: Critical — unauthenticated access via AI agent execution paths across both frameworks
    Impact: Attackers can extract environment secrets including API keys and database credentials, read filesystem data, and access the full conversation history of deployed agents running vulnerable versions.
    Action: Patch immediately to the latest versions of langchain-core and langgraph. Audit all production agents for overly broad filesystem and environment variable permissions. Restrict agent execution environments using a secrets manager rather than direct environment variable injection.

  • PolyShell / Magento Adobe Commerce — Active Mass Exploitation:
    Risk: High — web skimmer using WebRTC data channels to bypass standard security controls
    Impact: Attackers injecting payment skimmer payloads into Magento and Adobe Commerce checkout flows since March 19; over 50 IP addresses participating in active scanning, with stolen card data exfiltrated through WebRTC channels that most WAF rules don't inspect.
    Action: Apply Adobe Commerce patches immediately. Implement Content Security Policy headers to restrict unauthorized WebRTC connections on checkout pages. Review server logs for PolyShell indicators of compromise from the past 10 days.

  • Medusa Ransomware — Active US Healthcare and Government Targeting:
    Risk: High — active ransomware group with confirmed US attacks in March
    Impact: Medusa claimed attacks on the University of Mississippi Medical Center and Passaic County, NJ government systems this month, encrypting operational data and threatening to publish stolen records if ransom is not paid.
    Action: Verify backup isolation posture now — backups must be air-gapped, immutable, and tested. Confirm EDR coverage on legacy clinical and OT systems, which are Medusa's preferred initial access points. Review CISA's published Medusa TTPs and apply recommended network segmentation controls.

In the 1990s, "fax bombing" was a documented enterprise attack method used by adversaries that would send malicious fax machines into an infinite print loop, jamming incoming business lines and burning through paper and toner until someone physically intervened. Companies actually hired people to stand at fax machines during business hours and watch for it.

The Lesson: Every new automation technology creates an attack surface before security catches up. We didn't build fax security before deploying fax machines. We didn't build AI agent identity before deploying AI agents. The pattern is the same. The blast radius this time is considerably larger.
